Local English Language Media: Radio, TV, Print & Online

Radio

The BBC World Service  can be received on short wave while the main BBC stations and other English-language radio can be received via many satellite TV installations. Click here for West and South West Europe's frequency chart, or here for the listing of frequencies - note that all times given are GMT, so you must add an hour during winter and two hours during summer for local time (CET).

Voice of America is also available on short wave, with NewsNow. Its frequency chart for the region is here, and its programme guide is here. 

Radio in Liguria

Liguria, Monaco and the French Riviera have the following English-language radio stations, broadcasting from Monaco and Italy.

• Radio International: FM 100.5, 100.7, 100.9, 101.0. Easy-listening music and international news in English broadcast to Italy, Monaco and France
• The Rock of the Riviera: FM 88.4. Non-stop music, international rock with tracks from the greatest bands of the UK and US  
• Riviera Radio: FM 106.3 and 106.5 and listen online. English-language DJ-led shows, chat, local and international news and contemporary music broadcast to Liguria, Monaco and the French Riviera
• Radio Caroline: Providing weekend programmes and an FM relay for the Radio Caroline network in the South of France and the Italian Riviera 

Radio on the Internet: English language stations online

Many international radio stations are available streamed live on the Internet. You typically need Real Player (Real Player Basic, the free version, is rather hidden away on the real.com website, but it does exist) although sometimes a feed is available in Windows Media format, compatible with the players that have shipped with recent versions of Windows and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Television

To pick up English language free-to-air programmes (unscrambled) such as BBC World, CNBC Europe,  CNN International,  Euronews, MTV and Skynews, you will need a satellite reception system capable of picking up the Astra-1 satellite cluster.

If you wish to access a few more channels, you can opt for a HotBird system available on the HotBird satellite cluster.

A step up from this is the Astra 2 system which will allow you to see ITV, BBC 1 and BBC 2 programmes although to receive these you will need a rather large dish: 2.4 to 3 metres.

Major Italian dailies are published in Italian only and available at newsstands throughout the region. International press (UK, US, German, Dutch) is available at newsstands in larger towns, usually the day after publication.
