Quake terminology

Joanne S writes in General

can anyone tell me how you translate the "boato" of an earthquake into English. Was trying to tell my Mum about the noise a quake can make and wondered if there was a specific term for it.
Thoughts with all those affected and hope and pray the earth stays still!

Didn't know this one so I asked an English friend that speaks fluent Italian and she though it roughly translated into 'roar' I then looked it up and it seems about right.

I was interested to read that San Remo is an earthquake risk area. There is a fault line running from San Remo through Santo Stefano, Pigna, Castel vittorio, and Bairdo into France.

I do remember a couple of years ago that there was a minor quake near Bairdo but I had no idea that this was an area at risk.

A lot of foreigners are under the mistaken impression that northern Italy is not an Earthquake risk area..Although it's not as active as the south it certainly is active.

There are also tremors here which are the result of quakes in the south, depending on the severity of the quake.
