Is this normal? When I took up with our landlord the fact we were getting little shocks off appliances and had a very erratic electrical system he finally agreed to get an electrician in to check. Who confirmed everything was fine. When I asked if everything was earthed he said yes but none of that is relevant if the whole building wasn't earthed which is apparently very common! Is this true? Should I be worried or am I being too "British" about it? |

If you are getting shocks of your appliances and you are not earthed do something about it, fast. It isn't a case of being too British, it's a case of safety.
I'm afraid the electrical standards in France and Italy are dreadful. I have two villas in France, both places were in superb condition when I bought them but the wiring in both hadn't been touched in years. I had the both places rewired before I moved in. I have friends in Italy that have bought places and said that the electrical system in the houses had to be seen to be believed.
It's not at all unusual down here, and this subject has come up quite a few times on the Riviera site from people that have had the same problem as you. The advice has always been either get it sorted or find a new place.
Linda. Crazy in love with my slob.

| Only use appliances that have an earth wire attached to an earth pin that goes into a earthed socket, dont use extensions without earthed sockets either. |

| I agree that it sounds very dangerous but I did some enquiring a year or so ago and was told a huge amount of palazzi in Italy aren't earthed! Frightening! |

Rach, I'm shocked (excuse the pun) but not surprised. The other aspect is insurance. If the electrical system is not up to code I would have thought that this would void your insurance.
In France before you can have your electricity connected, EDF check it out first, is it not the same in Italy?
Horacio, I know nothing about electricity, but it seems to me that if the plug has an earth pin, but the building is not earthed, then it's a futile exercise.
