Does anyone have any idea how the social security works for someone who woks in Monaco? I currently live in France which is covered by reciprocal agreements and seems to work ok. We are thining of moving to Italy, has anyone on the forum got experience of dealing with this. We are a young family (2 kids) with one income. Has anyone got any experience to share or advice about this?

Thanks!!

I have found out the answers for this, Italians working in Monaco are subject to Italian regime. Foreigners are subject to Monagesque system, so emergency medical treatment only is paid for in Italy then scheduled stuff has to be in France or Monaco where it is reimbursed as if they were living in Monaco or France. There is no right at all to family allowance unless you are French, Monagesque or Italian. Unemployment benefit is from Monaco.

In France, workers in Monaco who are not French or Monagesque can claim French family allowance so this is different.

Be careful regarding the unemployment - if you are not french or italian or married to an italian and want to live in Italy (while working in Monaco) you will not be entitled to unemployment benefits even though you pay contributions each month. I discovered this a few years back when made redundant - I could not claim from Italy, France or Monaco - luckily a found a new job straight away!!

I have been researching this and it may be illegal under European law. There is a directive concerning bilateral treaties with non-EU states and they have to apply equally to other EU citizens.

Thanks for the warning though, I'm sure it would be a nightmare trying to get anything out of them!
