Short term rental this winter

We are a retired professional couple from Canada who would like to spend an extended time in France and Italy this winter (Nov09 to April 2010). We would like to spend time in several places, so are looking for a short term rental of one or two weeks in several areas. We only require a small bedsit or one bedroom apartment or cottage. Since we will be travelling for up to 6 months, we are looking for a reasonably cost effective accommodation. We would consider house/pet sitting as well as rental. We like both city and country locations. We are able to provide references - either Canadian or UK, and have rented in France previously, so could probably also provide a reference from a French resident.
