In Italy, a public holiday is called a giorno festivo, while a national holiday is a festa nazionale.

Each region celebrates different saints and festivals and although it may not be a general holiday, business may close to take part in the celebrations
If the holiday falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday it is common for people to take the intervening day to make the "bridge" for a long weekend: fare il ponte
